Well, just gotta cackle at my bad timing, first off. Here I want to gush about an artist, but my link to her Elfwood art page is pretty worthless because the site is down!

Anyway, I found her Elfwood page some time ago, and when they revamped the site so that I could add 'Favorites' for art, in my scavenging about, I found it again. She makes wonderful gryphon plushies from her own pattern, and I fell head over heels for a raven-like black one. Yum, yum, yum how I wanted him! Didn't think it would ever happen, however.

But life can be very strange and blessed and the world can seem very small at times. Back in the beginning of February I was doing my Friday ritual of going through my eBay searches, and decided to run the gryphon/griffon one again, though I don't check it every week because it's so much work to sort through all the brands to actually get at what I want--the mythical creature. And what should I find but an auction for a plushie commission! And who should it be by...this very same artist! Once I figured that out, there was no hesitating; I just had to bid and ask for a black black utterly black gryphon with pale 'Black Prince' yellow eyes quite like the one I'd fallen in love with on Elfwood.

She was just great at keeping in touch with me each step of the way, and letting me see photos as she got near completetion, in case there was anything I wanted changed. So a week or so ago it was finished, and yesterday it arrived. In a great big box that UPS was wonderful enough to put in a bag, since it was raining most of the day.

I simply love the work she put into the forefeet and the talons in particular, and how lifelike the eyes are, and the long fur for a 'crest' on his head.

Cats being cats, of course Arun liked the box more!

just to be fair, here's one of Shado slinking about

I shall restrain myself from naming him either Skandranon (Mercedes Lackey's arrogant black gryphon through whom I fell in love with black gryphons) or the Black Prince *ducks*. He's a wonderful size for hugging and I am so impressed with all the work she put into it. The wings can be lifted up, too!

So there's my treat of yesterday. For tonight, very happy to get rolling with 'Great Wave' writing again!

He's gorgeous! You are a lucky one indeed. Have you decided on a name yet?

Love the photo of Arun in the box too. It's so full of mischief.

Thanks! I'm leaning toward 'Ebony' right now, very creative and original I know. ;)

They like that box. I put it in their room, later I'll have to flip it over and cut a hole in it. =)

Not Onyx? It means fingernails in Ancient Greek, and he looks like he has some doozies there.

That wouldn't work for me because I don't much care for the word and I've grown up pronouncing it wrong anyway (learning too many words from books instead of dialogue).

But thinking of stones reminds me of obsidian. I might like that...

Thanks for the suggestion!

He certainly is different and unique. He is quite big he makes your
vulture look small. Looks like she did a great job. Glad you were
able to get him. Was there a biding war for this commission ?
Hope you find a good name for him.
Thanks for posting the fun photo of blackie and the cats.

He's quite big! I was surprised when she told me the sizes she offered, because it was hard to figure out scale from the photos in her art gallery.

No bidding war, just me. I don't think she does commissions very often, and she certainly isn't widely known. I was quite surprised recently to learn someone on the Windstone Forum has a gryphon by her!

Thanks for looking! =) I know gryphons aren't your thing.

Thanks! I hope you spotted your wonderful pillow too! =) Since it's winter, it gets hugged at least twice a day.

That's awesome!! But if you name him the Black Prince, he won't be nearly so huggable...
On March 26th, 2009 05:23 pm (UTC), hyarmi_records replied:
If I name him the Black Prince, I'd just be hugging him because I know the Black Prince would hate a hug from a human and that wouldn't be the best motive! =)

Thanks for your e-mails! I'll get to them when I'm home from work.
