Both the eating and the outing have been a treat:
Yummies abound! Got to have avocado and fried plantain, thanks to my wonderful aunt mailing some to my mom in time for my arrival. And on top of that, super delicious fresh-cooked brussels sprouts that are going to make my frozen ones in my freezer at home feel poor fare indeed. My parents and I have also enjoyed the two-way popcorn and German candy I brought along. And then there's the fresh, local-grown pecans and walnuts I bought on my way back to their house today. Yum, yum, yum!
Didn't make it in December of 2008 because I got sick, and time got away from me in November of 2009, but today in 2010 I finally made it back to the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge. (Went alone, as my mom was too busy with last-minute Christmas preparations.) It was a blast seeing so many thousands of wintering waterfowl, especially when the snow geese would take to the air in a huge swarm. Spotted 12 types of geese and ducks, not including egrets, coots, hawks, pelicans and the little birds. Then on my drive back, also got to see roosters, magpies, a great blue heron and a kingfisher. Pity it wasn't as sunny up there as it was in Sacramento, but I'm glad the sun did peek out at time, and it never got wetter than a drizzle. For the curious, I've uploaded a small selection of photos.
And tomorrow is Christmas Eve! =D
