My mom's visit has been going wonderfully:
My mom had a smooth flight over last Wednesday and is enjoying the semi-finished guest room I'd prepared for her. On Thursday we were able to visit a couple apple orchards ahead of a big storm, then got out to see The Butler at the theater in the afternoon.
Friday through Monday was our Chicago trip, and it went very well. We were blessed with fantastic weather the entire time. Despite the aggravations of road construction, tolls, and having to catch trains, subways, or buses, we made every connection we needed to. On Saturday we visited the science museum and were especially impressed by the exhibit with the captured German U-boat and the tour that got us inside it. Later in the day took a boat tour of the city that was partly on the Chicago River, and partly on Lake Michigan--amazing architecture. (Can't forget the fun of getting Chicago mix popcorn in downtown Chicago--it was fantastic!)
On Sunday we did some walking around the Magnificent Mile shopping area, then I quelled my loathing of baseball so that my mom could fulfill her dream of watching a game at Wrigley Field stadium. (I passed most of the time reading. =) Headed to Portage, Wisconsin that evening, with a stop at the Texas Roadhouse in Madison.
Monday we had a great walk at Devil's Lake State Park, then some shopping fun at a discount mall we discovered in the Wisconsin Dells area, and then headed home. The great weather continued on Tuesday, which was my mom's birthday. I treated her to lunch at Tavern on Grand, then we walked around looking at the shops on Grand Avenue, and in the evening she was taken out for another ball game at the new Twins Stadium, while I got to have a little time to catch up on my journal and do some 'TFE' editing.
Today was another beautiful day, and we both greatly enjoyed a visit to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, a stop at their Apple House, and then checked out a local Mexican restaurant for dinner. It was really nice to get a reprieve from work for a while, and I'm also enjoying being back in a state that doesn't have tolls!
